It is a tradition in our family every year in the holiday season to watch the Frank Capra classic “It’s a Wonderful Life”. In fact I’ve seen it so many times that I can quote word-for-word many of the scenes.
The scene that has the most meaning to me as a professional Realtor® is when the family is at the dinner table and George Bailey’s younger brother Harry is heading off to a party that he is trying to get his big brother to attend. George is leaving for college soon and shares with his father that he wants to be an architect and see the world. He just couldn’t imagine being a part of carrying on his father’s dream of running the Bedford Falls Building and Loan. George sees the enterprise as small and penny-ante and he wants to create and build on a grand level.
George: Oh, now Pop, I couldn’t. I couldn’t face being cooped up for the rest of my life in a shabby little office…Oh, I’m sorry Pop, I didn’t mean that, but this business of nickels and dimes and spending all your life trying to figure out how to save three cents on a length of pipe…I’d go crazy. I want to do something big and something important.
Pop: You know, George, I feel that in a small way we are doing something important. Satisfying a fundamental urge. It’s deep in the race for a man to want his own roof and walls and fireplace, and we’re helping him get those things in our shabby little office.
As a professional Realtor®, I echo Mr. Bailey’s sentiment. In a small and big ways we are doing something important, satisfying the fundamental desire of home ownership. Assisting Purchasers with finding a home that meets their needs and walking them through the myriad of steps to make that happen is very rewarding. It is our privilege to work on a daily basis with Sellers on what is typically their largest asset is our profession.
