Where We Live: Walter Heights

Walter Heights is a community of just over 50 Single Family Homes located just outside Downtown McLean. This neighborhood sits just off Dolley Madison Blvd and runs along Buchanan St and Melrose Ave. Originally built in the 20s, these homes have plenty of history and with their prime location is a hotspot for grand New Builds.

This neighborhood’s origins are in the 20s, and many of those houses are still around. These homes are well made and have a classic, timeless feel. The neighborhood feels more homey and suburban than you’d expect for it’s amazing location. The neighborhood started out as Sears Bungalows that were either rebuilt or expanded over the years. You can find more information on the Sear’s Bungalows from this era here: http://www.searsarchives.com/homes/1927-1932.htm

The schools for this neighborhood are some of the best in Virginia and the Nation. Residents attend Franklin Sherman or Haycock Elementary Schools, Cooper Middle, and Langley High School. These schools are a big part of the property values in this area. More information on the desirability and quality of the school district can be found here. The two major thru-roads to Downtown McLean are Old Dominion Dr and Chain Bridge Rd (which becomes Dolly Madison Blvd), and this neighborhood sits right off Dolly Madison, less than a mile away from Old Dominion. The McLean Community Center which will reopen soon after an extensive renovation and Dolley Madison Library are near the McLean Central Park which hosts a summer concert series at near intersection.

If in downtown McLean please stop by to visit at our office in Keller Williams at 6820 Elm Street! Keep an eye out for our monthly Community Charity Champions event at Pulcinella Italian Host also in downtown McLean. If you’re looking for a quick lunch, I enjoy stopping by Sweet Leaf Café for their excellent make your own style salads. For a more formal occasion, I recommend Capri Ristorante Italiano or J. Gilberts. Assaggi Osteria which is located a short walk across Old Dominion just opened a Neapolitan pizzeria as well as serves other Italian Classics.  If you want to cook at home, you can pick up groceries at Balducci’s, Giant Food, and stop by The Organic Butcher for a steak.

An expanded and renovated Sears bungalow, Crescent model at 1213 Buchanan St is now on the market! The property features a double lot, extensive landscaping, oversize garage with workroom as well as extensive renovations to the original Sears home.
