Where We Live: Sugarland Run - Great Falls

Sugarland Run is a community of about 50 homes along Seneca Road and Kentland Drive at the Fairfax/Loudon County border.  The majority of the homes are in Fairfax County with a few just over the county line in Loudon.  Many of the homes sit on large parcels, affording privacy and tranquility and in some cases views of the Shenandoah mountains.

Home to many technology entrepreneurs, politicians, executives, and professional athletes, Great Falls is a common choice among DC commuters who value a small town vibe, tranquil spaces and privacy while still feeling connected to the city.  Just 10 minutes to Reston Town Center, 20 minutes to Dulles Airport and 45 minutes to DC, the Great Falls lifestyle strikes a balance between comfort and access.  Interestingly, the George Washington Parkway is intentionally not expanded into Great Falls to keep the town the way it is.

Great Falls National Park is one of the best and most scenic parks in Northern Virginia. The annual pass is an affordable $30.  The park has many great trails of varying difficulties and also caters to hiking, kayaking, horseback riding and more. It is well maintained and has friendly and helpful staff at the visitor centers. More information can be found here. https://www.nps.gov/grfa/index.htm

Sugarland Run is nearby two popular country clubs in Northern Virgina. Trump National and River Bend.  Information on Trump National can be found at https://www.trumpnationaldc.com/ and information on River Bend can be found at https://rbgcc.org/. Both of these venues provide golf, tennis, swimming and social memberships through referral.  Their grounds are expertly maintained and enjoy a healthy rivalry between their year round tennis and summer swim teams.

A hidden gem in Great Falls is Turner Farm Park. Turner Farm is a public Fairfax County park known primarily for its equestrian facilities and is also home to a great observatory. The equestrian facilities, which include dressage markers, a cross-country course, and jumps, are free to use from dawn to dusk most days.  After sunset, the Analemma Society holds viewings and astronomy sessions that you can sign up for online. For more information about the park, go to https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/turner-farm .
