Where We Live: Franklin Park

Deemed the “Urban Forest”, Franklin Park is a highly sought after McLean neighborhood on the Arlington border that is known for its wooded and hilly terrain with a New England feel.  Dating back to 1909, the neighborhood consists of nearly 300 homes, many of which are newer homes that have replaced the original.  The craftsman style home, many true to form, dominates the landscape while colonials, modern farmhouses and the occasional mid-century modern line the winding streets.  Lots range from .25 acre to over 1 acre.  The majority of the lots are about 0.3-0.5 acre.

Chesterbrook Shopping Center, which is currently undergoing major improvements, is located right across the street on Old Dominion Drive and features Safeway, Walgreens, Starbucks and local favorite Mylo’s Grill, among other retailers.  Popular Lee Heights Shopping Center featuring Arrow Wine, Randolph’s Pastries and Child’s Play Toys is 2.5 miles up the road in Arlington.  Downtown McLean is just 3 miles away, and commuting from Franklin Park into DC for work or play is a breeze.  You can also hop on the Orange and Silver lines at the East Falls Church metro, which is only 2 miles away.

The neighborhood allows for easy access to major commuter roads. Old Dominion Dr, I-66, I-495, and the Dulles Toll Road are conveniently nearby. In addition, Franklin Park is a part of Fairfax County’s top-rated school system. Chesterbrook Elementary and Longfellow Middle are both less than 1.5 miles away, and McLean High is 3.2 miles away.

Several small parks are nearby as well, including Linway Terrace Park in McLean with basketball, tennis and a baseball diamond, and Harrison Street Park and Glebe Road Park in Arlington.  Or, if you are really ambitious, ride your bike along Kirby Road, to Chesterbrook Road, to Glebe Road, over the Chain Bridge and along the C&O Trail into Georgetown!

Currently there are 4 properties on the market in Franklin Park, two of which are new builds listed for over $3,000,000.  Recently, HBC Group’s Lizzy Conroy sold 1884 Virginia Ave for $1,664,500. This beautiful craftsman home is situated on almost half an acre and features 4 bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms, and over 4,300 square feet of gorgeous updates throughout!
